When the guitarist begins, he often wants "a sound". This translates into more or less gain, or what this or that artist uses etc... When we progress and become more specialized, when the ear is educated, we are interested in frequencies, and how it sounds within a mix or a group, and not alone in front of the amp. Because yes, guitarist friends, it's when you mix that you see what really works and what doesn't work at all. And generally, we realize that there is a monumental gap between what works and what we imagine!
The XAct Tone Solutions Shapecharger is a real tool for sculpting your sound. To go where something is missing, or to remove what is too much. It's an advanced boost, capable of actually tweaking your sound for better and... for better! This, in all situations. In short, with the Shapecharger, you sound better! All the time.
Light case, well finished, super quality PCB and parts, everything is there for the Shapecharger to follow you for many years. The controls are: Gain, Mid-Gain, Mid-Freq and Range.
So what is the Shapecharger actually? It is an ultra-discrete transistor circuit that is capable of providing a very versatile type of boost. It consists of two independent FET-type Boost sections. One for a boost that will bring thickness and punch transparently, the other that will allow you to work on the mids.
The first slice of the Shapecharger really approximates the dynamics of a tube circuit. The base of the circuit is very similar to that of the Pegasus boost, which is a full-range boost. In certain situations, the use of a boost of this type on an amp or an already saturated pedal brings too much low, it is therefore important to be able to correct this part of the spectrum. This is what the Range knob does: It tightens the bottom, slightly boosting the treble and compression.
The second slice is a mid-boost providing the ability to sweep a wide frequency range. The mid-boost comes before the main gain stage and is capable of twisting any amp or pedal behind it. It benefits from a very discreet but extremely effective parametric control. With the Mid Freq control, you can act on the low mids to gain thickness or hollow them, and boost the high mids to pass through the mix (400 > 1200kHz). When you push the settings to the extremes you have almost the equivalent of a Wah filter.
Finally, the foot-switch has two functions and allows you to activate one or the other of the channels, or both at the same time.
John Mayer, Tom Bukovac, Tim Pierce and so many other renowned guitarists have built their sound by working on the frequencies and ranges of their many pedals. With the Shapecharger you have an essential tool to refine, muscle or adapt your sound as you wish.
