The Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian is a big muff type effect pedal, based on the highly sought after Sovtek Green Russian Big Muff π. Appeared in the mid-90s, this big muff is distinguished by a modified circuit delivering less gain, a darker drive, a solid low end and a clear and precise midrange with a slight fuzzy side that passes through the mix.
Used by The Black Keys, White Stripes, Mars Volta...it's a character muff that is iconic of the period. Many rock bands have used this pedal.
In this redesigned version, the Californian brand adopts a classic size chassis while retaining the essence of the original circuit. Top components, quality PCB, indestructible box, everything is there. In terms of controls, there are the classic Volume, Tone and Distortion. A 9V input and voila!
The Tall Font Russian is therefore a derivative of the first big muffs of the Ram's Head type and others. So what's the difference? Well first of all, the circuit was manufactured at the time in Russia, for a question of cost. The components were for the most part very standard and the “parts” of a relatively… deplorable quality! This meant that these pedals did not survive very long which made them rare and coveted. But, these weaknesses are in fact what made it so successful. Indeed, the sound of the " Green Russian " is largely linked to its circuit, far from the "hi-fi" standard of the genre. Compared to a classic muff, this one sounds more bassy and "boxy", with a thicker low mid and a more fuzzy high end. Also, it has less gain than its predecessors while retaining a very characteristic woody side. The drive is fluid, the high mids soft, fluid, with a little more bite than the Box Of War and a little less low than the latter. To get a good idea of the sound delivered, listen to the Black Keys and the song Your Touch. It is extremely representative.
Have the Tall Font Russian, Wren and Cuff upholds its reputation as specialists in vintage BigMuff reissues. This modernized version, manufactured in a very nice way and sold at a more than reasonable price, is an excellent choice for anyone looking for an indestructible version from the Sovtek period. The brand has succeeded in perfectly replicating vintage pedals while adding rock-solid reliability and extended versatility, which the original was sorely lacking. For 90's fans!
