The Weehbo Plexdrive is a low-gain overdrive pedal recreating the sound of the old Marshal Plexi in the purest tradition of what Hendrix, Jimmy Page and a few others could get out of it in the 60s and 70s.
The Plexdrive adopts a "dual" box with, on the left, a clean boost that couldn't be cleaner, and on the right the overdrive which benefits from 2 different Gain modes, the usual Level and Gain, a Tone and a Presence setting. There is also an Input button which allows you to control the input impedance, the pre-gain and to tighten the bass more or less. Inside, it's very very pretty, with PCBs and components of excellent quality and a precision assembly. German quality!
Small detail that is important, the pedal can be powered by 9V and has an additional button that allows you to raise this voltage internally to 18V. What does this change? Well in 9V you have a softer sound, a little warmer. At 18V you have more headroom and increased dynamics. We leave the choice to you and it couldn't be nicer!
Connected to a Two-Rock Studio Signature with a Super Strat and a configuration for the cleanest possible base, we start with the boost alone. This one is of perfect transparency and a rarely seen naturalness. No misplaced highs, no extra hiss, no stiffness, it's your sound, with more output and attack. By engaging the overdrive with the Drive button at 3:00 p.m., the Input at 1:00 p.m. and the Tone and Presence at noon with the switch on More, you get a typical Plexi 70's sound. There is bite, a fairly bright upper end, slamming, but not aggressive. a typical high mid and a very articulate low. This works wonders on all positions of the Strat. By plugging in a Les Paul, you get the same type of clarity on the attack with higher compression. It slices, the "honk" of mahogany provides all the characteristic sounds that can be expected from a Plexi. Led Zep, AC/DC, everything is there. Here, no excessive gain, we are on a light overdrive, but which produces a very dense drive, as always with Weehbo, with lots of harmonics and a unique punch.
Low gain version, more vintage of the JCM Drive, it will be perfect for all those looking for a transparent, precise OD, with a warm grain that highlights your instrument thanks to a very beautiful transparency. An excellent pedal that stands out as one of the benchmarks of its kind.
