Olivera Vintage Oil Can Echo

Strymon continues to expand its compact range with Olivera, a “vintage oil can echo” delay pedal born from extensive reverse-engineering of rare oil-filled electromechanical units from the 60s. The team developed a dedicated algorithm to recreate the principle of a statically charged rotating disc in oil, with its dark repeats, slightly irregular timing and organic modulation, while opening it up to fully modern use.

Aesthetically, this is a very compact format, with a lightweight yet robust anodized aluminium chassis, relay-based footswitch, status LED, and six controls on the top panel: TIME, HEADS (short/long/both), MIX, RATE, INTENSITY and REGEN. Build quality is exactly what you would expect from the brand, with an ultra-low-noise Class A JFET analog front end and 24-bit / 96 kHz processing driven by an ARM processor. On the back, you get true stereo on TRS IN/OUT jacks, an I/O selector (mono, mono > stereo, stereo), a multi-function EXP/MIDI jack (expression, MiniSwitch, MultiSwitch Plus, TRS MIDI), a USB-C port for MIDI/firmware, and a 9 V DC input (250 mA).

Let’s talk sound. Olivera nails the classic oil can character: an echo with limited bandwidth, dark and slightly “gritty,” with repeats that have a truly unique sonic fingerprint. The magic lies in the random, slightly unstable cadence of the repeats and the shifting tone, caused by the virtual rotation of the disc. The HEADS switch lets you choose between short, long, or both heads for multi-tap patterns, while TIME covers everything from tight slapback to medium, atmospheric delays (roughly 72–620 ms depending on the head, plus the “ghost repeats” generated by the rotation).
REGEN goes from a subtle halo, almost reverb-like, to infinite oscillation for ambient fans and massive soundscapes. RATE/INTENSITY control a highly interactive modulation that can stay subtle or become completely enveloping, with a lush character that enhances the echo beautifully. The secondary TONE function, hidden on the REGEN control, lets you move from very dark repeats to brighter textures that sit more easily in a mix.
As always with Strymon, your dry signal can remain fully analog, be converted to digital dry, or be completely removed (Kill Dry) for perfect integration in parallel loops, on a console or in complex stereo rigs.
