The Dreadnought is the guitar that paved the way for high-end, artisanal boutique guitar building. In the early 1970s, few players would consider a guitar smaller than a dreadnought. The "traditional" D dominated the market at the time, but many guitarists, including the best players, found themselves hampered by its predominant bass and very, or even too, thin treble. The strength of a typical dreadnought lies in its power and volume, made possible by its large body. The increased air volume also gives the instrument a propensity for the lower register. This is an asset for some playing styles and a liability for others.
The Santa Cruz Model D adopts a unique conical bracing, optimized to emphasize the midrange and highs without compromising bass volume. This design gives the Model D a more even balance and greater versatility than traditionally braced dreadnoughts. The D was carefully designed to meet the needs of the modern player: sophisticated balance, with more thickness and presence in the midrange and highs. Achieving these qualities in a typical dreadnought format requires a non-traditional approach compared to the industrial productions of the time. By drawing on decades of expertise, Santa Cruz has created a kind of Trojan horse: familiar on the outside, formidable on the inside. The Model D is a flattering guitar: a sure bet for those who demand volume without sacrificing the top end.

This D Custom features a construction built around a Sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides. The bracing is custom Adirondak spruce for this model. A binding in the form of a border highlights the beauty of its lines. The rosette, which echoes this border, adds a classic touch in all its sobriety. The neck adopts the traditional design of pre-war guitars. A very comfortable V-shaped profile, combined with a fingerboard ebony body with 2mm MOP dot inlays, ensures smooth playability. This combination delivers powerful and balanced tones.
