The Nordvang Skyline is designed based on the famous Timmy, a superb, exceptionally versatile overdrive that seamlessly transitions from a natural, uncompressed low gain sound, to a pushed, punchy drive with "amp like" compression for maximum fluidity. Nordvang has incorporated a whole bunch of extra-features which allow you to have the grain of the best "mods" of the genre, while expanding its field of action drastically and offering many more sound textures. All thanks to an additional clean boost slice and an intelligent design within a compact case.
Regarding the case, we are very high-end, as always with the Danish brand. Perfect finish, hand-picked components and original design. We find the usual Gain, Level and Tone buttons. Also, a Boost button to control the output level of the associated channel and a Low button which allows you to adjust the low frequency response of the gain stage over the entire range. With the EQ toggle switch you can go further into the low and high end of the spectrum where the original Timmy cannot go. 3 positions: Full frequency, Low-mids and High-mids. The mini SAT button is where the magic lies. It allows you to add an additional gain stage and act on the clarity and presence of the drive. Best of all, inside you have dip-switches that work as follows:
1- HIGHS: Works in conjunction with the Tone button. It modifies the high-cut parameter linked to the Tone button. 2- CLIPPING: Dipswitches 2 and 3 offer a range of clipping diode settings. From symmetrical clipping with 2 or 4 diodes, to asymmetrical clipping with 3 or 5 diodes. 3- LOWS: Modifies the low frequency cut-off of the Lows button 4- MIDS: Adds a bump in the lower midrange, to give a TS-like side to your sound. The Boost slice is completely isolated and is located before the drive circuit. It's a clean boost based on an ultra transparent OP-Amp (+18db). You can associate the 3-band EQ with it. This slice allows you to recover enormous dynamics and greatly expand the spectrum of the original circuit. For those who always need more!
The input stage is equipped with an (excellent) dual buffer. Instead of simply opting for the usual buffered bypass which is composed of three NPN transistor buffer stages in series, Nordvang chose another option. Directly inspired by Gravity, the Skyline benefits from 2 buffers in series based on TS (NPN) and Klon (OP-Amp) which provide a very beautiful and unique color. This can be activated or deactivated as needed.
We attack with a super strat on a very nice clean channel, right at 12:00 and we must tell you, that it immediately gives you a big smile on your face. We're not talking about the usual, about the déjà vu, about the conventional, we're about having fun at the bar. It's beautiful, ultra dynamic, it crashes, it bends, it bounces in all directions, it's everything you want from a great pedal. By pushing the gain and the mid-SAT button, it's hell. The drive is fluid, squashy, very rich and very amp-like. It's a Timmy boosted with hormones and a real slap in the face to the pedals of the genre available. It's that, only better, with more of everything. Guitars Rebellion Award for this magnificent sound machine, endowed with extreme versatility.
