The JAM Pedals TubeDreamer mk.2 is a TS808-style overdrive built and hand-painted in Athens. At the heart of the circuit sits the JRC4558D chip, the one found in the most sought-after 808s, paired with a three-diode asymmetrical clipping stage that responds to your picking and to the guitar's volume knob. The midrange is present and open, never pinched, and cuts through the mix without ever turning harsh. One of the benchmarks of the genre, from the Greek brand founded by Jannis Anastasakis.
Rugged enclosure, paintwork done by hand in the workshop, every unit is slightly unique. The layout stays easy to read: Level for output volume, Tone for tonal balance, Gain for the amount of saturation, and a Clipping toggle to select the asymmetrical mode or the no-diode mode. At the bottom, two footswitches, the effect and HIGH GAIN. True Bypass, 9V DC tip-negative power, 60 mA. Two internal trimmers set the output level of the High Gain stage, independently for each clipping mode.
On a clean channel with the Gain at 9 o'clock and the Level pushed, you get a formidable mid-boost: more presence, more projection, the amp's character left intact. The Gain sweep is usable from end to end, and the edge-of-breakup spreads across a real range of settings instead of flipping over in a quarter turn. The Tone adds sparkle in the top end with a smoothness that's rare in this category. And the pedal stacks cleanly in front of a crunch channel without losing any of its integrity.
The two clipping voices:
- Asymmetrical: three diodes, warm compression, touch sensitivity and harmonic richness. The reference 808 tone, the one that lifts your leads.
- No diode (N): more headroom and clarity, an open and dynamic response, behaving much like a preamp stage with a very amp-like feel.
The HIGH GAIN footswitch brings in an extra gain stage: more sustain, more thickness for leads, without ever getting woolly. Set it to match the effect volume for a simple change of texture, or higher for a real level boost. The power-on state is configurable, effect and High Gain included: the pedal comes back on exactly as you left it.
On a clean setup: blues, vintage rock, jazz fusion, country, anything that relies on a dynamic and expressive tone, with humbuckers or single coils, it all works. On a crunch or lead channel, it becomes the secret weapon for moving into hard rock and metal territory by acting as a gain boost. One of the best TS-style pedals on the market, no question.
