In 2019, Free The Tone developed two new series as part of a complete redesign of its solderless lineup: the SL-4 for the CU-416 cable (4mm) and the SL-5 for the CU-5050 cable (5mm). The SL-5 is new to the lineup. It is the first Free The Tone solderless plug compatible with the CU-5050, a cable with a different sonic profile from the CU-416: reinforced frequency range in the lower end of the spectrum, and increased solidity for those who want to use their pedals without a fixed pedalboard.
Constructively, the SL-5 shares the same mechanical philosophy as the SL-4. The tip and core wire connection pin are integrated into a single piece for direct, lossless signal transduction. Assembly is identical: the CU-5050 cable is inserted directly into the plug, a tip pierces the cable center, and an adjustable screw ensures grounding and mechanical retention. The SL-5 is available in straight (SL-5S) and L-shaped (SL-5L) configurations, in nickel (NI) finish. Caps are replaceable via the SLC-5A series (6 colors, sold separately) in two variants: SLC-5AS for the straight plug and SLC-5AL for the L-shaped plug. The paired CU-5050 cable is 5mm in diameter, built with 50 strands of 0.08mm oxygen-free copper (OFC), giving it high flexibility and durability. Its high-density braided shield provides near-immunity to external electromagnetic interference.
The CU-5050 offers a reinforced frequency range in the lower end of the spectrum compared to the CU-416: low end and low-mids more present and better defined. It is the cable for bassists, 7- and 8-string guitars, drop tunings, or those who simply want a bit more body in the low end. Its more substantial construction (5mm diameter, 50-strand OFC, high-density braided shield) also delivers increased solidity for those who want to use their pedals without a fixed pedalboard, with the repeated connections and disconnections that entails.
For a more neutral sound and ultra-compact wiring, the SL-4 series with the CU-416 cable is the right choice.
