The Grobert Obsessive Driver is an Overdrive type effects pedal based on the excellent Fulltone OCD (yes, it's green!). Here, no lambda copy with a small component changed here and there, we are on a real evolution with a plethora of new functions and a very largely modified circuit. Of course, the essence of the original pedal has been retained, Grobert's specialty being expanding the possibilities of a circuit to its maximum while retaining its characteristic sound signature.
The Obsessive Driver adopts a quality case that drastically extends the original controls of the historic model. One thing is certain, the controls are much more numerous than originally: Level (volume), Tone (EQ), Drive (gain), Voice (contour / presence), Dry (blend of the signal mixed in parallel), Booster (boost). There are 2 footswitches, one for the bypass, the other to activate the boost. Finally, the pedal offers two mini-switches.
- The first allows you to activate a Low Pass or High Pass filter.
- The second allows you to bypass (MOD) one of the transistors used for a softer and more fluid sound.
The OCD is a "fat", very dense overdrive, with a very thick midrange, very forward and amp-like dynamics. With the Obsessive, Grobert takes its sound signature and makes it more versatile. The range of use is enormous. You sweep everything from light OD to very strong distortion. The dynamics are excellent, the response is fast and the drive is very fluid. Like the original, the high-mids are quite straight and marked. The boost is extremely effective and will allow you to reach more muscular registers. It will be ideal for solos, this one adding binder and quite a bit of gain. By pushing the Voice knob, you can deepen the mids and tighten the low end for a tighter, more modern sound. On the other hand, you will gain in openness with softness. Our favorite setting? HP with Mod and Boost activated. With this, you have a real additional amp channel.
Offered at a very attractive price, the Obsessive Driver offers you a "mega OCD" with increased possibilities and insolent manufacturing quality. Enough to make many brands (boutiques or not) blush. At this price and considering what it offers, it is an excellent option for those looking for the original model which is no longer manufactured.
