With the Plexstar, Flattley takes us to fans of big rock/hard-rock sound with a JTM45 “in a box” on steroids. Make no mistake, this is not yet another copy, the brand imposes its own sound signature within this pretty rock 'n roll colored box. Here, with a narrow and slender drive, you find the richness and thickness of a real amp channel that pops.
Quality case with perfect finish, top-notch PCB, very progressive and musical controls, no doubt, we are at Flattley. It can be seen and heard! The controls couldn't be more classic: Gain, Volume, Tone and a mini toggle switch to activate the Boost function.
Connected with a Les Paul on a pure clean channel, the first thing you notice is that the drive delivered is very very dense, very amp like. It is oriented low medium and "fat", and not Plexi bright. With a Les Paul or an SG, it's just fabulous.
There is enough gain to cover all but the most extreme styles. For these we will add a little EQ and clean boost which will allow you to shake the building.
It’s a qualitative and rich drive in the sense that it ticks all the boxes. Dynamics, grain, response, clean on the volume knob... It cuts through the mix without being too bright and does not fall into the pitfalls of "over-compression" which makes many pedals of the type inaudible.
We will appreciate the absence of hiss, the high quality of the case and the sound delivered from all angles. It's by taking the Plexstar in hand and spending a few minutes on it that you appreciate its intense side and its meticulous design.
The boost is widely used to thicken the drive a little more, it only reinforces this amp-like feeling, "marshall in a box", without being too typical while remaining faithful to the first models of the legendary English brand. Think of a modified Marshall with lower-pitched frequencies and more careful manufacturing.
