More than a decade ago, German guitarist Gregor Hilden bought a Diablo at a small shop in Germany and never looked back. A natural ambassador for the brand, he asked for a more personalised version of his favourite pedal: slightly tweaked controls and a fully independent, adjustable boost. The GH Signature was born.
On the construction and aesthetic front, no surprises: the design is excellent, the enclosure is top-notch and the build quality is flawless, as always with OKKO. You'll find the familiar Level, Tone and Gain controls, but where the Diablo GH stands apart is with the addition of the Feed, Body and Dyn knobs. Feed acts as a contour on the low end, adding thickness and a more or less boomy quality to the bottom. Body adds low-mids in the first gain stage. Dyn adjusts the internal voltage from 6 to 18 volts, varying the headroom, compression and bass response accordingly. Two mini-switches complete the picture: Mid for adjusting the frequency range of the Tone control, and Input for setting the sensitivity of the input stage. The Boost section is fully independent and placed after the drive stage. The Boost knob controls volume (gain is fixed), while a dedicated Tone knob adjusts the treble content of the boosted signal.
Superstrat and ES-335 in hand, on a quality clean channel, what strikes immediately is the enormous interaction with the effect and the precision of the controls. The settings are ultra-responsive and progressive, the range of use extremely wide, particularly in terms of Gain, which allows the Diablo GH to feel at home in a wide variety of styles. Whatever the guitar — Strat, Les Paul or otherwise — it sounds right. Same goes for the amp: entry-level, mid-range or high-end, combo or head, it adapts and consistently delivers the same sonic richness. The OKKO Diablo GH works with a huge range of configurations, which is rare and extremely valuable.
The Diablo GH excels on a quality clean channel and stacks superbly on a crunch for a BIG bluesy lead. For a "pedal", the dynamics are incredible, the sensitivity first-rate and the response full of nuance. At this price, that's genuinely rare. Its versatility also comes from the Dyn knob, which lets you move from a soft, compressed drive with rolled-off highs to a wide-open drive with tight bass, boosted high-mids and headroom to spare — which explains why it cleans up beautifully at the guitar's volume knob.
